Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a historical sacred bo tree (Ficus religiosa) in the Mahamewuna Garden in historical city of AnuradhapuraSri Lanka. This is believed to be a tree grown from a cutting of the southern branch from the historical sacred bo tree, Sri Maha Bodhi, which was destroyed during Emperor Ashoka the Great time, at Buddha Gaya in India, under which Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) attained Enlightenment. The Buddhist nun Sangamitta Maha Theri, a daughter of Indian Emperor Ashoka, in 288 BC, brought the tree cutting to Sri Lanka during the reign of Sinhalese King Devanampiya Tissa. At more than 2,300 years old, it is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date. The Mahavamsa, or the great chronicle of the Sinhalese, provides an elaborate account of the establishment of the Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi on the Island and the subsequent development of the site as a major Buddhist pilgrimage site.

Ruwanweli Maha Seya

Is Ruwanweli Seya a feast of civil engineering marvel, enshrining the relics of Lord Buddha or did it have a higher purpose? Designed by Arhants or enlightened ones themselves archaeologists and investigators inquire the greater purpose of a stupa whose construction was predicted by Buddha and was awaited by Arhants, gods and humans.

Built nearly 2500 years ago, accomplishing a prediction made by Lord Buddha himself, Ruwanweli Seya or the pagoda of golden dust, was one of the largest structures in the ancient world, standing 103 m tall with a circumference of 290 m.

Mihintale

In the 4th century BCE, Mihintale (Mihinthalaya) was a dense jungle teeming with wildlife, serving as a royal hunting ground. This landscape transformed in 307 BCE with the arrival of Mahinda Maha Thero, the son of Indian Emperor Ashoka. At Missaka Pauwa (Mihintale Rock), Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa for the first time and posed a series of famous questions to test whether the king possessed the intelligence to comprehend the teachings of the Buddha. This historic encounter marked the beginning of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Isurumuniya Temple

The Meghagiri Vihara is now commonly known as Isurumuniya Vihara or Isurumuniya and lies near Tissa Wewa of Anuradhapura. But the original Isurumuni Vihara is located a few hundred meters away and is now called Vessagiri Vihara. When this viharaya was discovered it would have been thought to be the Isurumuniya mentioned in ancient texts even though no inscriptions have been found. Later when archaeologists found the real Isurumuni Viharaya a few hundred meters away (with inscriptions identifying its name), the name Isurumuniya was already taken and the site was called Vessagiriya.
