Rankot Vihara
Polonnaruwa was the second kingdom of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka, after the kingdom of Anuradhapura. Following the older tradition of the kings of the first kingdom, the Polonnaruwa kings too saw fit to leave their footprints in the form of stupas built during their times of reign. The stupas were usually different from in design from those of the Anuradhapura kings and followed a style unique to Polonnaruwa, but there were a few exceptions.

Minneriya National Park
There are as many as nine national parks in Sri Lanka, of which Minneriya National Park is a smaller one, but the park is located between Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, with forests, lakes and wild animals covering an area of about 90 square kilometers . The landscape in the park is a huge water storage lake built by King Mahasin in the third century, the area is one of the largest in the country. The impoundment lake area is exposed to grass during the dry season, including elephant herds from areas such as Matara, Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee. There will be as many as 2-300 heads. So Minneriya National Park is one of the important elephant habitats in the country.

Giritale Lake Polonnaruwa
Giritale Wewa or Giritale Tank is a reservoir in Giritale and Minneriya. Giritale Tank was one of the deepest tanks in Sri Lanka during the rule of ancient capital Polonnaruwa.
The Giritale Wewa Reservoir is not only a sightseeing venue in the area but also a historic location having a rich mythological history. The Sea of Parakrama built by Parakramabahu I is only a few kilometres away from the reservoir.
